The town is situated on a Roman road and is thought to have been the site of a Roman station. Today, Great Dunmow is home to around 9000 people and is popular with commuters, due to its mix of rural charm and good transport connections to London.

Great Dunmow is probably best known for the Flitch Trials, which take place every four years, with the next ceremony on 12 July 2008. Couples have to convince a jury they have not argued during the last year and if they succeed, they win a flitch of bacon. You can learn about the ceremony in the History Links section.
